Captain Stephen Rhodes, the Commanding Officer of D Company. Captain Rhodes’ connection with the battalion began in 1903 and he would eventually command it on active service before going on to carve out a distinguished post-war military career. At the time this photograph was taken he was two months away from a serious wound that would keep him out of action for more than three months. Returning to the battalion in October 1915 he would then take over the duties of Adjutant in November on the recall of the promoted Major Parkinson to Britain. After the Armistice he commanded the 1/5 until 1928 when he was promoted to command 147 (West Riding) Infantry Brigade. Captain Rhodes’ brother was also an officer of the battalion.
